Introducing Take2

Take2 is a New Zealand-based not-for-profit that helps break the cycle of reoffending. It offers incarcerated individuals and ex-offenders the chance to build technical and life skills through its tech programmes. Founded in 2019 by Cameron Smith, Take2 addresses two key challenges: the tech industry’s talent shortage and the employment barriers faced by people with criminal records.

Participants learn coding languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while also developing teamwork and practical skills. With Take2’s support, 88% of graduates secure jobs within six months, and 83% earn promotions within a year. Originally launched at Auckland South Corrections Facility, Take2 has now expanded to Newmarket and even Australia, with graduates joining companies like Datacom, RUSH, and Xero. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Data Need

Take2 wanted data support - to refine their theory of change, and data capture systems, especially as they are quite early in their data maturity journey. The desired outputs were a structure to capture data and metrics for short, medium and long term impacts of their theory of change. They also wanted a dashboard on Google Data Studio to show the organisation’s impact on key metrics and to improve their operations.

Our Process

At GDI, creating a dashboard with Take2 was an engaging, collaborative journey. We started by meeting with the Take2 team to understand their mission and data sources, and to identify the key metrics they care about—such as student progress, engagement levels, and job placement outcomes. These conversations were essential for aligning on what data truly matters to them.

With a solid grasp of their needs, we moved to the design phase, presenting wireframes that laid out the dashboard’s potential look and feel. This step was all about making sure the layout would not only display key insights but also be functional for the team to use. Take2’s feedback at this stage was invaluable, helping us fine-tune the structure and design choices.

The Solution

Our work with Take2 resulted in a no-cost, easy-to-use dashboard built on Google Looker Studio. Designed with their needs in mind, the dashboard offers a clear view of essential metrics all in real-time. The layout is intuitive, making it simple for the Take2 team to access insights without requiring technical expertise.

To ensure a smooth transition, we provided comprehensive handover documentation, empowering their team to manage the dashboard independently. Whether it’s tracking impact or reporting to stakeholders, Take2 now has a powerful tool that showcases their progress and supports their mission—without adding any financial or operational burden.

The Outcome

We were so thrilled to have been able to collaborate with such an incredible charity in Take2 and are looking forward to seeing how they continue to progress on their data journey and helping the community.
